blue have you thought how if GM and Ford went under that your family's business will suffer because that would amount to about 300,000 jobs lost and over 150 billion taken out of our economy. Those people won't be able to eat out meaning less restaurant business meaning less food ordering from you. Or is your company exempt from market forces?

GM plans $500M for 45-mpg small car

LORDSTOWN, Ohio -- General Motors Corp. will invest more than $500 million in the United States to build its next-generation compact car, the Chevy Cruze.
The car is a key element of GM's strategy to build smaller, more fuel-efficient models to stoke sales and help restore profits amid sinking demand for its money-making big pickups and sport utility vehicles.
GM will pour $150 million into developing the Cruze and another $350 million into its factory here, where the car will be built. The plant is in the Mahoning Valley section of Ohio, an area hit hard by shuttered steel mills and economic uncertainty. On Thursday, when the automaker announced the investment and took the wraps off a foam model of the Cruze, throngs of workers, retirees, executives, dealers and politicians snapped photos of the car with their cell phones.
The Cruze is expected to get about 45 miles per gallon and serve as a counter-punch to $4-per-gallon gasoline once it goes into production in April 2010. Soaring gas prices and a sagging U.S. economy are fueling an industry-wide shift among consumers from trucks and SUVs toward small cars and crossovers.
GM is not alone in its push to bring smaller cars to the market and speed up production of other fuel-efficient models. Ford Motor Co. announced this year that it is converting some of its truck plants for car production and it is bringing over its European small cars to build in America.
Key piece of GM's strategy
The Cruze is a key piece of GM's small-car strategy and critical to its turnaround effort. The company reported a $15.5 billion second quarter loss and has seen its year-to-date sales drop 17.7 percent from the same period a year ago, according to Autodata Corp.
Small cars have been money-losers but GM believes growing consumer demand for smaller vehicles combined with the labor cost savings achieved in a landmark contract negotiated last year with the United Auto Workers will help make them profitable.
"Consumers are willing to pay a fair price for a good car," said GM CEO Rick Wagoner. "And (the UAW) has a significantly different labor agreement. That should enable this car to be profitable."
For some, the Cruze and its introduction into showrooms in a year and a half is being viewed as a critical moment in the automaker's history.
In two or three years, people might say "this is where the rebirth of General Motors started -- with that car," Jim Graham, president of United Auto Workers Local 1112, said Thursday as he gestured toward the Cruze during the event at the Lordstown plant.
The Cruze, will be bigger than a Chevy Cobalt but smaller than a Malibu, and also will be built in GM's Europe and Asia Pacific markets. All versions of the car will be built on the same platform, which means they will share common parts and engineering, cutting costs.
Once the Cruze goes into full production, the Cobalt will no longer be built, said Ed Peper, head of Chevrolet in North America. But he stressed that the Cruze is not a replacement for the Cobalt.
Of GM's next 19 vehicle launches, 18 will be passenger cars or car-based crossovers, in response to the sales gains the company has seen for these models.
Sales of the Chevrolet Malibu are up 79 percent compared to July a year ago, while sales for the Chevrolet Aveo are up 17 percent and Cobalt sales increased 4 percent, according to Autodata.
GM's small-car strategy also involves increasing production for some cars such as the Malibu and keeping a third shift producing the Chevrolet Impala next year in Oshawa, Ontario.
At the same time, GM is cutting production of pickups and SUVs.
Lordstown plant touted
GM chose to build its next generation small car in Lordstown because of the success of the Cobalt built here, the millions in state tax incentives and the automotive complex, which is the highest volume, single-line, vehicle assembly plant in the world.
While GM cuts production elsewhere, Lordstown is growing.
Based on the success of the Cobalt, the automaker recently added a third production shift and 1,400 jobs in Lordstown. That's a record hiring spree at the 42-year-old plant, which also produces the Pontiac G5 compact car, and a move labeled Thursday as the single-largest job expansion in the region in more than 30 years.
Two years ago, the plant appeared dead with fears GM was going to move small-car production to Mexico, union leaders said.
But workers in a valley where several other factories have been replaced by brownfields said they're relieved.
"It feels great. It assures our children a job and gives people here who still have time to retire leeway to keep working," said Harry Bukovinsky, 55, a carpenter who has worked at Lordstown for 31 years. His daughter also works there.
UAW leaders view the Cruze as fruit of the new labor agreement and GM's commitment to new products.
GM expects to see significant savings in 2010 from the landmark labor contract it negotiated with the UAW last year. That's due in large part to the shifting of its retiree health care obligations to the union in the form of a voluntary employees' beneficiary association, or VEBA.
A VEBA is a tax-free health care trust fund where money is set aside, in this case by GM, today to pay for promised benefits. The union agreed to take over the health care obligations and will use the $31.9 billion GM has been approved to pay into the fund to cover its $47 billion in health-care liabilities.
The Cruze arrived in Lordstown, in part, because UAW workers kept their commitment to "do things differently," UAW International Vice President Cal Rapson said.
"You did that," he told cheering workers. "You are the reason this product is coming here."

blue what about the 500 million GM is investing in Lordstown Ohio for the next generation Cobalt. That is double of what the Thailand plant is getting in case you can't do math. Plus the Thailand plant will support China and south east Asia.

What about the Japanese goverment paying for the Toyota's prius battery devolpement, to the tune of about a billion dollars. Oh, How about our goverment supporting Toyota prius with tax incentives for buying one. Or the billions in tax incentivs for building plants in the us, that are now idle. Yes thats right the texas tundra is in shut down mode with workers being trained on diversty, and safety and othe BS things becuase their truck is net selling. The US Goveremts has given more to the foeriegn car companies than they have the big three combined in the last 20 years. Toyata has 8 plants in us, GM has 61. GM in one year spends more money in the us than Toyota and Honda combined, it is not even close. Toyat and Honda spend about 5 billion in the us a year GM spends 85 billion a year.

My rope goes 15 off 18 off 25 off than I have know idea which increments they are from there. I have never gotten a full run past 15 off at 36. What do you ski at? Let me guess we are on the Internet so I would say you probably are at 35 off @ 36 mph and hit all 6 every time all day long, right?
For the last 8 or so years I have basically just wakeboarded, I only ski two to three times a year. And I still have not had the chance to wakeboard off a tower and I don't think my 180 RX fourwinns is the boat for a tower, not with a 150 on it at least, it needs more power down low. I dropped the prop to a 17 pitch 14.5" diameter 4 blade stainless which helped a lot but 150HP is still just 150HP.

Hey you guys have a course also? We have one on our lake that one guy put up and lets everyone use it as long as you replace any buoys you cut, most of the people on our lake still don't know how to drive a course. I usually start at 34 with 15 off and finish azz over tea kettle at 36 with 18 off. : )

I was not trying to brag or make myself seem like I am wealthy, or better than anyone else like bluegeek. I simply asked HIM a question to see if he has any clue on how the world works when you don't live in your parent's basement. The last time I checked a person's income has no bearing on the quality of the person.
BTW I make $1.50 an hour plus tips and cab fare home twice a week. I even get to pick which days. : )
